The second Youth Bridges Europe exchange in Germany focused on transforming reflection into action by equipping participants with practical tools for democratic participation. The activities built on the themes explored in the previous exchange in Bosnia and Herzegovina encouraged young people to reflect on how democratic societies can be strengthened through active citizenship, critical thinking, and inclusive participation.
Throughout the exchange, participants explored different forms of civic engagement and learned how young people can actively shape democratic processes in Europe. Workshops addressed topics such as youth participation, democratic resilience, and the European Citizens’Initiative, allowing participants to better understand both the challenges and possibilities facing democracy today.
A key part of the programme was the visit to Cologne’s NS Documentation Centre, where participants reflected on the consequences of authoritarianism, exclusion, and hate, while connecting historical memory to present-day democratic responsibilities. These discussions encouraged participants to critically engage with the role of remembrance in protecting democratic values and human rights across Europe.
The exchange also placed strong emphasis on intercultural dialogue, collaboration, and creative expression. Participants took part in LightLab Democracy: Europe’s Role in the World, an immersive light and sound installation exploring democracy, participation, and Europe’s role in defending human rights. Through this collective experience, participants reflected on the importance of democratic engagement in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
By the end of the exchange, participants had not only deepened their understanding of democracy and participation but had also strengthened an international network of young people committed to dialogue, remembrance, solidarity, and democratic action across Europe.
