First-ever online collection of signatures sets Italy up for referendum on euthanasia

Italy is experiencing history in the making - thanks to a citizens’ initiative regarding legalizing euthanasia.

The petition was able to collect signatures online for the first time in Italian history thanks to a judge’s ruling amidst the Covid pandemic. 500,000 signatures are required to trigger a referendum on the issue, which was already comfortably reached by the initiators of the petition: The campaign reached over 750,000 signatures - over 200,000 of which were collected online.

We can expect a referendum in Italy to be held on the issue in 2022, once the constitutional court legally reviews the initiative, which in Italy, is done only after the submission of the signatures.

Daniela Vancic interviewed Eumans’s campaign coordinator in Italy, Lorenzo Mineo, who has the details.
