Jose Huizar (13-Year Sentence): As the former head of the powerful Planning and Land Use Management Committee, Huizar led a criminal enterprise that extracted at least $1.5 million in bribes, including cash, casino chips, and luxury trips, from developers to fast-track downtown real estate projects. He pleaded guilty to racketeering (RICO) and tax evasion.
Mark Ridley-Thomas (Convicted): Convicted in March 2023 of bribery, conspiracy, and other felonies, Ridley-Thomas was found to have engaged in a quid pro quo scheme where he steered city contracts to the University of Southern California (USC) in exchange for benefits for his son.
Curren Price (Ongoing Charges): As of August 2025, Price faces multiple felony charges, including embezzlement, perjury, and conflict of interest. Prosecutors allege he voted on projects involving developers who were paying his wife.
Mitch Englander (Imprisoned): The former councilman was sentenced to federal prison in 2021 for obstructing an investigation into his acceptance of cash and gifts from a businessman.
Raymond Chan (Convicted): A former deputy mayor was found guilty in March 2024 of 12 felony counts, including RICO conspiracy and bribery, for his role in the Huizar corruption ring.
Nury Martinez (Resigned): In 2022, then-Council President Nury Martinez resigned after a recorded conversation revealed her making racist and derogatory comments while maneuvering to secure political power during redistricting.
Kevin DeLeon and Gilbert Cedillo Both were caught on the same tape. They were censured and stripped of committee assignments, but did not immediately resign. Cedillo retired at his term’s end. DeLeon ran for re-election and lost.
