VIDEO Voices From the First Citizens Assembly in Los Angeles

The sortition lottery-selected group urged historic changes to LA's charter

In the first citizens assembly ever held in Southern California, a lottery-selected group of 37 LA city residents recommended the first expansion of the city council since 1925. The assembly made eight other recommendations, including ranked choice voting, which were accepted by LA's appointed charter commission. The video, featuring interviews with assembly participants and facilitators, is from Public Democracy Los Angeles, one of the assembly's conveners.
