2026 Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy

Gaborone, Botswana | 7–10 October 2026 | Indigenous. Resilient. Empowering.

Hosted in Southern Africa’s longest-standing democracy, the 2026 Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy will be a chance to look closely at democratic innovation through Botswana’s political experience. Participants from around the world — including regional and local experts, practitioners, activists, and civil society organisations — will come together for workshops, plenary debates, and discussions on the state of direct and participatory democracy in Botswana’s capital.

This edition will focus on themes such as indigenous governance, democracy and its current challenges, and how democratic practices intersect with global issues like natural resource management, climate change and regional integration.
